For those who asked, I think the distance would be the exact same. I would just group times together, regardless of whether they used the segment that turned on 5th or 8th.

I inspected the segment prior to the ride. Saw that it took Francis all the way to 8th. This was mirrored by the signage on the course (and this has been the established route since 2020). Sorry for those that followed a different path offered on Ride with GPS. The Ride with GPS route should be updated to mirror the correct course. In the future, be sure to look at the details of a Strava segment before committing to it (as an 11-year Strava user, it is Strava 101 to verify a segment, so learn from the experience). I noted pre-ride where the segment started AND ended as well (it didn’t end at the “finish line” but actually a little ways further into the parking lot – you have to pass THAT point to stop the clock). Do your research for the next time and you will be less likely to be disappointed.

Very frustrating. I turned on 5th even though I saw everyone riding up to 8th to keep my Garmin from beeping off course at me. I did not get recorded. I’m sure I was first female over 75. That sucks. I can provide my time to the top from the split I took when I got there.

Hi there,
Apologies for the confusion. A volunteer set up the Strava Segment Challenge. Forgive the ignorance if this is a dumb question, but since the distance is exactly the same whether you take 5th or 8th, wouldn’t your time still apply? Anyone else who experienced this issue and who would like to share their time from the split can send it along to be posted on the website.

It would be the same distance

@pachamber: Same distance. Any difference in total climb (if there is any) is so trivial that it is not worth worrying about it. There will be much more variance in user-submitted times however as the rider would have to have known their elapsed time at the start and at the finish, Also, the locations of those starts and stops will not match the 8th street segment. To overcome this, I created a duplicate Strava segment to gather equivalent times for riders who traversed from Francis to Race via 5th Street instead of 8th Street. The URL of the segment is:
https://www.strava.com/segments/35137030
It is titled “Hurricane Ridge Ride 2023 With GPS 5th Street Misroute”
The start and end points of this segment mirror those on the official segment as close as Strava allows (pretty close). So there should be your second list for the Ride with GPS crowd.
